Coronavirus (COVID-19) Preparedness

March 3, 2020

Dear St. Emily Parishioners,

            With coronavirus spreading without clear knowledge of its cause and the implications involved in its spreading, I believe it best to err on the side of caution. Effective today, I ask that the following precautions be implemented immediately.

  • Suspension of  holding hands at the Our Father
  • Suspension of the sign of peace
  • Suspension of the distribution of the Precious blood at Communion time
  • Removal of holy water from fonts at all church exits

            I wish to remind all extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion that they must wash their hands before Mass begins and use an alcohol based anti-bacterial solution before and after distributing Holy Communion.

             I also wish to remind all the faithful that if they are sick or are experiencing symptoms of illness, they are not obligated to attend Mass and even that, out of concern for the wellbeing of all, they might not attend.

            The above precautions will remain in force until such time as our normal practices may be resumed without risk.     I will continue to evaluate any further measures that may need to be taken. In the event that the threat becomes dire, as it has in some places internationally, the Diocesan Bishop has the authority to:

            Grant a general dispensation to attend Sunday Mass;

            Suspend public celebrations of the liturgy, including Mass.

            My concern has always been and will be both the spiritual and physical wellbeing of all. Let us pray to our loving Father to strengthen our faith and to trust in his goodness and divine providence.
