Biography

Deacon Pavel Jurkulak was assigned by Cardinal Blase J. Cupich to serve the community of St. Emily in the fall of 2018. Ordained on May 17, 2015, by Bishop Francis J. Kane at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago, Deacon Pavel comes to St. Emily after serving for two years at St. John Brebeuf Parish in Niles.

Czechoslovakian by birth, Deacon Pavel was born in 1974 in a small town; his mom, Anna, is of Polish heritage and his father, Jan, a Slovakian Highlander (who passed away in August 2017 at the age of 69). Since the age of 6, Deacon Pavel has shown a love for the Church by sharing his time and talent as an altar server along with his older brother Petr. Deacon Pavel is proud of his family’s dedication to the Catholic Church and their commitment to their religious life.

At the age of 19, Deacon Pavel moved to Chicago by himself. Deacon Pavel and his wife, Wioletta, celebrated 21 years of marriage in 2018 and were delighted to share that milestone with their 16 year old son, Patrick. When not serving the People of God in the role of Deacon, he works for the United States Postal Service.

Deacon Pavel was first introduced to St. Emily Parish by Deacon Peter Hajdu when Deacon Pete invited him to the parish for Mass a few years earlier. Mundelein Seminary is where the two men first met when they were both studying at the Institute for Diaconal Studies (Deacon Pete was one year ahead of Deacon Pavel in the program). It was during his participation in the program that he met Deacon Pete and his wife, Melissa Hajdu. He remembers Deacon Pete as a very good friend who supported him on his spiritual journey, teaching him to be a humble and dedicated deacon to the people of St. Emily Parish.
